Alternative Breakfast Recipe: Overnight Oats Using Healthy Oatmeal and Delicious Flavours

Hello everyone!

I have had an extended break away from blogging, and now I'm refreshed and back with avengence!  I've just emigrated to Portugal, and I am currently still settling in...new country, new house, new routine, new job, new culture, new way of life!

And something I have found about my new way of life, is that my hectic mornings leave a lot to be desired!  Scoffing down a bowl of cold cereal whilst finishing off my make up is not the way forward!  I think it is so important to look after our bodies, so I have decided to take more time the night before to plan how breakfast is going to pan out.

Cereals and toast can be quick to fix but also full of fat and sugar.  Oatmeal is a great alternative to breakfast, firstly because it is just delicious, and secondly because it aids weight loss.  "And how does it do that?"I hear you cry.  Oatmeal keeps us fuller for longer, meaning that they keep those nasty hunger pangs at bay.

The best type of oats for this delicious "overnight oats" recipe is to use rolled oats.  This is quite a popular way of having breakfast, and you will see bloggers and youtubers all over the internet doing this and using mason jars.  Mason jars are gorgeous but I just think that lots of people don't actually have them.  I want to make my blog and recipes much more accessible to my audience, so I have just used an empty jam jar and empty honey jars instead.  By all means, use mason jars if you have them, but I want to make a point that you don't have to have them to participate in this fabulous breakfast phenomen.

So these overnight oats (in an old jar with a lid) are great because all you do is pop a third of a cup of rolled oats in, add a third cup of almond milk (or any other milk or milk alternative), and add a third of a cup of 0% fat free Greek yogurt and a teaspoon of chia seeds.  This is your base.  Then you just add whatever flavours you want, and leave the jars in the fridge overnight, ready for the morning.  The ratio of oats to wet ingredients is 1:2.

All the flavours fuse together and the next morning, the chia seeds and oats have absorbed most of the moisture, making it a delicious breakfast!  You can of course heat the jars up in the microwave for 20 seconds if you like warm oats.  I like to add the nuts in the morning instead of the night before.  This keeps them crunchy instead of going soggy!

The first idea is to have add to your base half a chopped up banana, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon of sweetener, then add the almonds in the morning:-

The second idea is to add a quarter cup of apple sauce, one teaspoon of sweetener, a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon, then add chopped almonds in the morning:-

The third idea is to add a handful of blueberries, some maple syrup, a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon, then some cashews in the morning:-

Here is my video demonstrating step-by-step how you go about creating this healthy breakfast with all three flavours:-
